| Phil Stacey - Final 8 Show - Latin Night with Jennifer Lopez |
| Phil Stacey admits to being a little phased when rehearsing this week with the beautiful Miss Lopez. "I keep glancing over and it's like Jennifer Lopez is sitting there watching me and I'm like... 'Wait, it is Jennifer Lopez!' All of a sudden, I'm like... 'Wait, what am I singing?'" |
| Well, he's singing "Maria, Maria", the second Santana number of the night. At first Jennifer wasn't really 'feeling it' so she asks him to try again and "think of somebody, I don't care who it is". We've got a good idea who it might be. Why... his wife of course! Nevertheless, Jennifer feels some goose-pimples so she is hopeful the audience will feel the same tonight. |
Unfortunately we don't. In fact, we reckon this is probably Phil's worst Idol performance to date. Okay, that doesn't mean it's terrible, but it is pretty lifeless and over-earnest. The original had plenty of raw passion, but Phil just sounds kind of desperate.
It's another performance where Phil fails to connect with us. Usually we enjoy his vocal, but not so much this time. Although Phil puts out a casual, happy go lucky air we sense an underlying tension. Ironically, we reckon his best chance of winning this thing is to believe he's got little chance of winning and just go out there, hang loose and give a 'what the heck' kind of performance.
| - "You didn't quite for me connect with the passion in that song" says Randy Jackson.
- Paula Abdul on the other hand thought that 'vocally' "it was really good".
- Simon Cowell tells Phil he's a nice guy, but... he adds, "no originality in the performance. I thought it was all a bit lifeless, a bit flat, your voice cracked towards the end. So there is nothing I can get particularly positive or excited about to be honest with you."
|
After the judges critique Phil interrupts Ryan to tell the story that his little daughter just got a stuffed animal which she quickly named 'Simon Cow'.
It's a funny thought, but it does come over a bit like 'rehearsed spontaneity'.
Phil perhaps wanted to get a little dig back at Simon. Of course the best way to do that is to prove him wrong with a knockout performance.
He obviosuly has bags of vocal talent, so, it's the connection, or lack of it, that remains the barrier between Phil and Idol success. He just needs to break that barrier down, but he needs to do it quick, because soon it may be too late!
