Chris Richardson - Final 10 Show - Gwen Stefani Night
Having watched Chris perform on previous Idol episodes Gwen Stefani has noticed "that he likes to do this kind of vocal Olympics thing". Maybe she fears that Chris might do something unspeakable to 'Don't Speak', because she says she's "hoping that he just kind of sticks to the melody and just brings it in here or there" when he attempts her 1996 No Doubt hit.
On the Idol stage tonight Chris kind of does a mini-olympics, by coloring the song with lots of mini-runs. We're not too keen on the result though, because to our ears a lot of the runs in the mid-part of the song sound off key.
Chris definitely looks like a pop star, but Simon Cowell's comment to him on Diana Ross night keeps ringing through our ears, "if you heard that record in isolation on the radio, you would switch to the nearest channel instantly"! If Chris had recorded this performance we reckon his 'vocal olympics' might easily have resulted in a broken record!
Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul seem to hear something entirely different to us.
- "You actually can sing the runs" affirms Randy "so I enjoy when you do that man. Just believe baby."
- There's no doubt that Paula is a believer in Chris. She simply tells him, "You're good, Chris, you're good. It was good."
- Simon Cowell liked the song choice and the arrangement but "wasn't crazy about the vocal". He explains why, "I think you struggled in the middle of that song" and warns Chris that he needs to pay a lot more attention to his vocals.
