Blake Lewis - Final 10 Show - Gwen Stefani Night
Blake's mentoring advice from Gwen Stefani is to go light on the beatboxing and stick to the melody of The Cure's 'Lovesong'. On stage he doesn't do any beatboxing at all, he sticks to a sweet and simple rendition of the number.
This song choice is another indication of Blake's left-field inclinations, and it's kind of risky because the restrained tempo of the piece isn't likely to get anyone overexcited. Purists and Curists will appreciate what Blake's putting out tonight, but will mainstream America?
Vocally, it's a good job, but again it's hard to get overexcited, because the arrangement isn't too vocally challenging.
- Randy Jackson shares our concerns about the song choice, but tells Blake "you made the most of it... I wasn't jumpin' up and down but I liked it."
- Paula Abdul is jumping up and down, kind of, "you're taking risks and you're being original and you're making this whole competition hip and cool and contemporary." She doesn't stop there, and clearly doesn't want Blake to stop there either because she tells him "I would love to see you in the finale."
- Simon Cowell tells Blake he's "definitely the strongest guy in the competition" but also warns him to avoid becoming too indulgent, "because you're in this Chris Daughtry zone at the moment where you are doing your own thing."
