Haley Scarnato - Final 10 Show - Gwen Stefani Night
Tonight Haley sings one of Gwen Stefani's all time favorites, "True Colors" by Cyndi Lauper. Gwen likes Haley's rehearsal rendition up to the point where Haley tweaks the melody. She thinks if Haley tones it down a bit "people will really like to hear her sing that".
On stage Haley looks fabulous, and in our opinion doesn't overtweak the melody. However, she doesn't really grab us with this number. She's on pitch and sings it well enough, but simply doesn't hit us at a gut level. It's an emotional song, but Haley looks more like she's performing the emotion rather than feeling it.
It's not that Haley is bad, it's just that we agree totally with Simon on this one, the performance is "sweet but forgettable", which is kind of a shame considering Simon has only just begun to remember her!
- Randy Jackson rambles ambivalently "It was just kind of alright for me, man... you didn't really grab me with that... I don't know. It was just okay. It had some pitchy moments. I don't know."
- Paula Abdul sides with Gwen Stefani, "It's a beautiful song that really requires nothing other than just singing the melody. And being vulnerable and just singing." but adds rather confusingly, "you have more of an adult contemporary performance to that and it didn't stay young-er... and I think that you should aim to be more contemporary."
- Simon Cowell elaborates on his "Sweet but forgettable" verdict, "you'll hear thousands and thousands of girls all over this country being able to sing like that" and declares the performance "too safe". Haley will be hoping she can take that literally when the results are announced tomorrow night!
