Chris Sligh - Final 10 Show - Gwen Stefani Night
Sitting on the stools answering Ryan's viewer question about downtime, Chris says that he occupies himself by knitting, crocheting and playing the bongos! He's joking of course, because the busy Idol schedule means that he uses all the time he can grab just to sleep and try and stay healthy.
Listening to Chris talking his throat sounds a little gruff, as though he may be a bit run down tonight.
He's chosen a great Police song, which suits his vocal tone, but during rehearsals Gwen Stefani notes that "The only thing he has to work on is the tempo because he was definitely off".
Gwen's warning is ominous for Chris, because although he sings in tune, he misses the beat for most of the song. This makes it hard for the audience and the viewer to really get into this performance. Also, Chris doesn't look as though he's enjoying or feeling the song himself. Maybe that's because he knows he's out of synch, or maybe he's just feeling out of sorts, possibly both. Whatever the reason, this is a low impact performance and definitely Chris' weakest showing in the contest to date.
Chris kind of knows what to expect from the panel, and they don't disappoint...
- Randy Jackson tells him "Rhythm-wise man, it made it a train wreck for me... You could never quite get in the pocket."
- "It becomes like an eyesore for the audience" says Paula Abdul, "because the audience is trying to groove with you." Although Paula also tells Chris "it sat really nice in the tonal part of your voice."
- Simon Cowell puts things more simply, "Forget pockets, timing, whatever, I thought it was a mess."
|
Chris is quick to admit he had problems with his song, explaining "the kick is rarely on the downbeat, which most songs have that" and concluding with refreshing honesty, "It's just one of those songs that you either get or you don't and so I was off, it was my bad."
After reading out the voting numbers Ryan Seacrest wishes Chris 'Good luck' but then adds rather ominously, "See what happens with that vote tomorrow"!
