Katharine McPhee sings her own choice for the final 3 show, Ella Fitzgerald's "I Ain't Got Nothing But The Blues".
For her final song tonight Katharine has chosen Ella's "I Ain't Got Nothing But The Blues".
She gives a confident, fun performance, which apart from a few too many vocal decorations, is quite entertaining. She's kind of enjoying herself too much though, because the fun in this song is derived from the irony of celebrating the blues. We don't get this from Katharine, who looks like she's never had the blues in her life!
Okay, we're being picky, and like the panel we don't want to rain on Kat's parade too much. It was very unlikely that she would outshine her earlier rainbow performance, which in truth is the only one of her songs we'll remember after tonight!

Panel-Bites:

Ryan Seacrest:  (Introduction, joining Katharine on the stools) All right, I'm headed over here to the young lady that ah, is from Sherman Oaks, who's caused an epidemic.

Katharine: (Smiling) I know!

Ryan Seacrest:  McPheever is everywhere. So Katharine, what have you chosen and why tonight?

Katharine: I'm singing "I Ain't Got Nothin' But The Blues". Ah, it's another one of the older songs but I didn't wanna be compared to anybody who's in the... you know, in the industry today, so I... And I love the song and I just have fun doing it.

Ryan Seacrest:  Final song of the night. You get set. Let's get into it ladies and gentlemen. Can she make it to the finale next week? Ladies and gentlemen, one more time on this stage with "I Ain't Got Nothin' But The Blues", it is Katharine McPhee...

Katharine Sings...

¯ Ain't got no change but a nickel ¯ Ain't got no bounce in my shoes ¯ Ain't go no fancy to tickle ¯ I ain't got nothing but the blues ¯ When trumpets flare up ¯ I keep my hair up ¯ I just can't make my hair come down ¯ Believe me pappy ¯ Can't get happy ¯ Since my ever loving baby left town ¯ Ain't got the change of a nickel ¯ Ain't got no feeling to bruise ¯ Ain't got no telephone numbers ¯ I ain't got nothing but the blues ¯

(Cheers and applause)

Randy Jackson:  (Chuckles) Yo... All right, so look... Still... still, I mean the last song was really my one for you. I mean, this was okay, you know, and I understand what you're tryin' to do, but you know you're kind of being... comparing yourself to Ella... Still it's those kinda a grades... it's ahhhhh-I-dunno-I-dunno-I-know... Paula? (Muted laughter)

Paula Abdul:  Well, your magic was "Somewhere Over The Rainbow"... (Katharine nods, smiling)

Randy Jackson:  (Giving the thumbs up) Mmmm. Mmmm. Mmmm.

Paula Abdul:  That's your element my dear. It really is...

Randy Jackson:  (Thumbs still up) Mmmm. Mmmm.

Paula Abdul:  ...but you know what? You still did a great job.

Katharine: (Smiles warily and nods) Okay.

Simon Cowell:  Ah, you know, look, overall you've had a good night tonight I think Katharine. I mean that was, you know, you go five steps forward, one step back with that. You know it's um, it was... I just wish we could've reversed the order... that you'd have ended up on the songs in the middle round, because that's what I want to remember, with all of you actually, funny enough tonight. It was, it was 'okay' Katharine.

Katharine: Okay.

Simon Cowell:  It was okay.

Ryan Seacrest:  (Joining Katharine on stage) Ground to cover with three songs for each of you in one show. (Ryan gives out the voting numbers) Thank you Katharine.

Katharine: Thank you!
