Elliott Yamin - American Idol 5 - Final 3 - Clive Davis' Choice - Open Arms

Elliott Yamin
Song: Open Arms Download 'Open Arms' at iTunes Check out 'Open Arms' at Amazon.com (Journey Download 'Journey' tracks at iTunes Check out 'Journey' at Amazon.com)

Elliott Yamin sings "Open Arms" with open arms!
Clive Davis has chosen a Journey number for Elliott. Of course, there's a link here with Idol judge Randy Jackson who played bass guitar with legendary rockers Journey from 1985-87. Clive classes "Open Arms" as a rock song, but we'd say it's more power ballad.
Elliott is wearing an open-necked shirt and light colored suit and he's looking casual and classy. His voice is strong and powerful, and he's sounding good, however he doesn't quite own this song on stage. We think Simon is right when he says Elliott seems a bit stiff. Despite singing well he doesn't show us his 'wow' factor with this performance.
Randy also notes a little problem in the chorus, where Elliott shuffled up the original lyric a bit, but thinks he "kind of worked it out". Paula, the panel's honorary Yaminian, congratulates Elliott on "a great job", but Simon advises him to "loosen up".
It's not the perfect start for Elliott, nor is it a disaster, and fortunately he has 2 more chances to impress this evening.

Panel-Bites:

Ryan Seacrest:  (Introduction) Elliott is going first. Let's see what Clive has chosen for him.

Intro clip...

Clive Davis:  (Alone, to camera) I've chosen the Journey classic "Open Arms" for Elliott Yamin.

Clive Davis:  (To Elliott) We're down now to the last 3 constestants so that every performance, you know, has got to be electrifying. It doesn't mean to go over the top but it means to show your soul, the honesty of the delivery, but most importantly in your case is the power of your voice... and "Open Arms" would give you that opportunity.

Clive Davis:  (To camera) Elliott has not done too many rock songs. I wanted to show he can do it and he can do it in a special way.

Elliott: (To Clive) I'm just thankful for the opportunity to meet you in person and just to be in your presence is... is an honor and I'm really looking forward to working on some projects with you in the very near future.

Clive Davis:  Kill 'em this week.

Elliott: I will... I will.

Clive Davis:  Good luck.

Elliott: Thank you very much. (They shake hands)

Elliott Sings...

¯ Lying beside you ¯ Here in the dark ¯ Feeling your heart beat with mine ¯ Softly you whisper ¯ You're so sincere ¯ How could our live be so blind ¯ We sailed on together ¯ We drifted apart ¯ And here you are by my side ¯ So now I come to you ¯ With open arms ¯ Hoping you'll see ¯ What your love means to me ¯ So here I am ¯ With open arms ¯ Nothing to hide ¯ Believe what I say ¯ Open arms ¯

(Cheers and applause)

Simon Cowell:  Randy go straight in.

Randy Jackson:  Yo-yo. So, you know of course that song is near and dear in my heart, 'cause I was in Journey for a while... one of the greatest bands ever! (Cheers) But check it out... check it out, check it out, check it out... You know what? At first when I thought of that choice for you I was like "I don't know man" but you know what, you kind of worked it out. You had a little problem in the chorus but you worked it out man. Feel free to take chances when you do this stuff dude.

Elliott: Okay.

Randy Jackson:  Do your thing.

Elliott: Thank you. (Cheers)

Paula Abdul:  Elliott...

Elliott: (Smiling) Ma'am.

Paula Abdul:  You're... you are in excellent voice tonight. I cannot wait to hear everyone sing. I think it's going to be the best night ever. You did a great job.

Elliott: Thank you very much. (Cheers and applause)

Simon Cowell:  (Coughs) Elliott, it was a good choice of song. It wasn't a great performance. You are a little stiff. Let me give you some advice young man... You have got to loosen up... (Elliott jiggles his shoulders) ...and start believing that you can make the finals next week. You can do better than that.

Elliott: Okay. (Cheers)

Ryan Seacrest:  (Joins Elliott on stage) Elliott Yamin... Two more songs to come. D'you feel lose tonight?

Elliott: I'm... (Jiggles again) ...I'm about to get loose, yeah.

Ryan Seacrest:  Do you believe that you can be at the finals?

Elliott: I do, I've... I believe more than ever now, so...

Ryan Seacrest:  Good.

Elliott: (Nods and speaks off mike - inaudible)

Ryan Seacrest:  (Gives out the voting numbers) ...Good job Elliott. (Shakes Elliott's hand)

Elliott: Thank you very much. Appreciate it.

Ryan Seacrest:  Thank you very much Sir....
