Katharine McPhee receives a mixed panel reaction to her performance of "I Can't Help Falling In Love"
When Katharine announces her 2nd song choice during her intro clip we're pleased she's chosen a ballad and hopeful that she'll improve on her earlier rather rocky performance.Katharine McPhee impresses Tommy Mottola during Graceland rehearsals for American Idol 5 'Elvis' week.
Unfortunately this performance also disappoints. It's a very decorous, showy interpretation of the song and Katharine injects way too much vibrato for our taste. On top of this, the beginning vocal sounds too frilly and midway through the song we hear more shrill high notes just like we did during her earlier Elvis number.
Again we find ourselves agreeing with Simon, Katharine has over creamed her apple pie for the second time tonight.
If she makes it through to next week she needs to lay off the cream and concentrate on whipping her fellow contestants by selecting numbers she's more comfortable with and singing them simply.

Panel-Bites:

Ryan Seacrest:  (Introduction) Okay, welcome back. One more from Katharine then you can vote. Take a look at this...

Intro clip...

Katharine: I'm singing "Can't Help Falling In Love" which was writen in 1961.

Katharine: (In rehearsals with Tommy Mottola) ¯ Wise men say ¯ ....

Katharine: (To camera) I believe it's one of Elvis' best romantic ballads that he ever did.

Tommy Mottola: This is one song to listen to the original recording. This is where Elvis really got into the lyric.

Tommy: (To Katharine) It's really important that you 'emote' right from the top. That doesn't mean you have to be loud vocally, but you really need to project.

Katharine: Project like in...

Tommy: Really project.

Katharine: (Playing with her hair) Okay.

Tommy: (To camera) The vocals come so easy to her that she forgets what she's singing about. So I told her to really pay attention to what that lyric is saying to your audience and then you'll get them.

Katharine: (Singing for Tommy in her audition) ¯ Falling in love ¯ ...

Tommy: I think Katharine has a very special voice. She's got this magical gleam in her eye when you watch her. She can do incredible things with her voice...

Katharine Sings...

¯ Wise men say only fools rush in ¯ But I can't help falling in love with you ¯ Like a river flows surely to the sea ¯ Darling so it goes ¯ Some things are meant to be ¯ Take my hand, take my whole life too ¯ For I can't help falling in love with you ¯

(Cheers and applause)

Randy Jackson:  Ah, okay, so, I think that was better... I think that was better than the first song. You ran out of a little air there at the end. And little pitchy problems here and there, but it was definitely better than the other one I thought.

Paula Abdul:  Actually I enjoyed watching... watching you dance and have fun for a change. I mean you really let loose on the first one. I'm used to hearing your ballads and you have a lovely voice. I liked... (indistinct)

Randy Jackson:  Hot shoes though.

Paula Abdul:  (To Randy) Oh beyond.... yeah.

Randy Jackson:  The shoes are hot.

Katharine: Look at my toes though. (Randy laughs)

Paula Abdul:  Now we can all share.

Simon Cowell:  Katharine, this hasn't been one of your best nights. I'm gonna be honest with you. Um, the song started off beautifully. And then it was... What I wanted was apple pie on its own and instead I've got apple pie and a gallon of cream on top.

Paula Abdul:  What?

Simon Cowell:  It was so over the top, the middle part, it was just too much!

Paula Abdul:  Your analogies!

Simon Cowell:  It was an accurate analogy actually Paula.

Randy Jackson:  Yeah well.

Simon Cowell:  I just.... See look, I think you came in tonight at a disadvantage. I don't think you chose the right songs tonight and that arrangement was just too much.

Ryan Seacrest:  (Joins Katharine on stage) Katharine McPhee? Definitely a challenging night for ya. (Ryan gives out the voting numbers) ...It is totally up to them (Pointing into the camera)

Katharine: (Sounding dejected) I know. (Laughs)

Ryan Seacrest:  (Pointing at the judges.) Not those three (Katharine laughs. (Points at the camera) Them... .you guys watching.
