Ryan Seacrest: (Introduction - on the stools with Chris) Chris Daughtry ladies and gentlemen... (Chris gives a wave and smiles. The audience cheer) ...Set to sing in a second. So each of the contestants have fan clubs. What are your fan clubs names.
Chris: Oh man we've got 'The Daughtry Gang', 'Chris Crew', 'Chrisaholics'... I mean the list goes on, so...
Ryan Seacrest: And you get boxes of gifts.
Chris: We do. Ah, you know what they send me... they send me a lot of junk food and that's cool...(Smiles)...Um, I got a belt buckle, a watch, ah... stuffed animals, letters of encouragement. It's really cool, um, cologne so they know what I smell like and sunscreen for my head so I don't get sunburnt... (Ryan laughs) ...and there's a... there's a question that er... there's a debate goin' on...
Ryan Seacrest: Yes.
Chris: ...with all my fans...
Ryan Seacrest: Uh-huh.
Chris: ...and to answer their question... (Faces the camera with thumbs up) ...'it's boxer briefs'. (Laughter)
Ryan Seacrest: (Gets up off his seat and starts to walk away in mock disgust)
Chris: (Jokey) They know what we're talkin' about. (Ryan is about 10 feet away now, Chris laughs out loud)
Ryan Seacrest: I'm a little uncomfortable with this conversation right now Chris. Um, let's see your trip to Graceland. (Moves up near Chris but refuses to look at him!) All right, go ahead. Here, roll the tape guys...
Intro clip... Chris: (To camera) I'm singin suspicious minds. It was... came out in 1969. It's my all time favorite Elvis song.
Chris: (Singing at Graceland rehearsals with by Tommy Mottola) ¯ We can't go on together ¯ With suspicious minds ¯ ...
Chris: (To camera) Tommy Mottola was excellent. Very genuine guy, um, very heartfelt, sincere comments.
Tommy Mottola: (To Chris at rehearsals) It's so easy for you vocally, 'cause you've got that great sound, that you tend to sometimes just let it go and come out. You need to dig in and really get into it.
Chris: Absolutely.
Tommy: That's what's going to make it different.
Chris: Absolutely.
Tommy: That's what'll make you shine with that song. 'Cause that...
Chris: It's not like I'm nervous or anything. (Tommy laughs)
Tommy: The thing that I like about Chris the most is his vocal sound. His vocal sound's incredible. It's a great, great sound. It will be amazing on record.
Chris sings...
¯ We're caught in a trap ¯ I can't walk out ¯ Because I love you too much baby ¯ Why can't you see ¯ What you're doing to me ¯ When you don't believe a word I say ¯ We can't go on together ¯ With suspicious minds ¯ And we can't build our dreams ¯ On suspicious lines ¯ Oh let our love survive ¯ Or dry the tears from your eyes ¯ Let's don't let a good thing die ¯ 'Cause honey, you know ¯ I'd never lie to you ¯ Oooo, oooo, ooo-oo ¯ Yeah, yeah ¯ We're caught in a trap ¯ I can't walk out ¯ Because I love you too much baby ¯
(Cheers and applause)
Randy Jackson: Yo, yo... so a nice kinda tender moment from a dawg, Chris man. It was nice I don't know if it was your best vocal performance for me, but it was kinda nice. It was kinda nice.
Chris: Thank you. Thank you.
Randy Jackson: (Audience boos) Kinda nice... it was a'ight.
Paula Abdul: You know what? You forget how great that song is until you hear Chris Daughtry sing it. (Cheers) And you know what... see ya in the finals!
Simon Cowell: Sunglasses aside, that worked.
Chris: (Smiling) Thank you.
Simon Cowell: I thought that was great.
Ryan Seacrest: (Joins Chris onstage) Chris Daughtry. Good news my man. (Shakes hands with Chris and gives out the voting numbers) He's standing here in hybrids ladies and gentlemen. Now all of America knows that. (To Chris) That's what you call boxer briefs.
Chris: Okay.
Ryan Seacrest: (Gives out more voting info) ...We'll see you in a bit, okay?
Chris: (Pats Ryan on the back) Thank you.
