I Don't Mean to Be Rude, But...: Backstage Gossip from American Idol & the Secrets that Can Make You a Star

American Idol (Results Show Final 5)

Our host Ryan Seacrest begins the show with a quick few words to Randy, Paula and Simon before turning to the 5 anxious Idols, soon to become 4. Their mood is hopeful but tense. They all sound in a positive frame of mind, especially Elliott who confirms to Ryan "I see myself, yeah, in a pool of my own sweat on that stage at the Kodak"!Elliott Yamin. Happy to sweat his way to Idol victory!
Ryan reminds us that this years Idol Tour will hit 40 cities coast to coast. Idol tour tickets will go on sale May 19 (for latest details check out http://www.americanidol.com/news/idol_tour/). He then announces that Elliott and the gang are going to sweat some more with a group performance of Delta Goodrem's Together We Are One  Check out 'Together We Are One' at Amazon.com.

The Idols sing...

¯ Here we are ¯ Sharing our lives ¯ We made it through ¯ The good and bad times ¯ And here we stand ¯ With hope in our hearts ¯ No matter what ¯ We will play our part ¯ And now we've come so far ¯ One chance to touch a star ¯ Go higher and higher ¯ Find your guiding inspiration ¯ In a place where dreams are made ¯ With a lifetime's preparation ¯ There's no time to be afraid ¯ Put our differences behind us ¯ Now we shine like the sun ¯ See what we've all become ¯ Together we are one ¯ Deep inside your heart and soul ¯ You’ve worked so hard ¯ To reach your goal ¯ With every step ¯ With every breath ¯ You gave it all ¯ Till there was nothing left ¯ Seek out the strength to win ¯ No thoughts of giving in ¯ Go higher and higher ¯ Find your guiding inspiration ¯ In a place where dreams are made ¯ With a lifetime's preparation ¯ There's no time to be afraid ¯ Put our differences behind us ¯ While we shine like the sun ¯ See what we've all become ¯ Together we are one ¯ (Find your guiding inspiration) ¯ (In a place where dreams are made) ¯ Together we are one ¯ (With a lifetime's preparation) ¯ Together we are one ¯

The peformance is a mixture of solos and ensemble. The 2 solos that stand out for us are Elliot's and Paris'. Basically it's enjoyable schmaltz, much like Little House On The Prairie. Hey look, there's Melissa Gilbert in the audience applauding our Idols!

After a quick break we are treated to this week's Ford-ommercial. The backing track is the Idols singing Kool And The Gang's "Hollywood Swinging Download 'Hollywood Swinging' at iTunes Check out 'Hollywood Swinging' at Amazon.com". Five straight-up Idols cruise around Hollywood in their Ford, checking out the weird and wonderful sights.

The Idols sing "Together We Are One" on the Final 5 show.
It's all happening in Hollywood... an outdoor disco, multi-color hairdos, acrobats, a grizzly biker, ZZ Top tri-cyclists, a rollerblading girl and even a skateboarding dog! The car pulls up and when the Idols pop out it's clear their Hollywood ride has changed them! It's like the American Idol stylist has been hallucinating and turned our Idols into a motley crew of futuristic outlaws.
Watching the video back in the studio sets the gang of 5 off into peals of embarrassed laughter and it seems to relax their tensions at least for the moment. Soon they will know their fate, but first they have to sit through the recaps and another commercial break.
Ryan stands at the lectern ready for the serious business of the night, but first he reveals that the 4 Idols who survive the show will be whisked to Graceland to be greeted by music mogul Tommy Mottola. There they'll be given an Elvis Workshop in preparation for next week's Elvis theme.

The time has come to find out who are in this week's bottom 2.

Ryan begins picking off the Idols one by one, reminding them of what they sang and the reactions from the judges before revealing if they are safe. The lights dim, the spotlight hits Taylor... he's safe. Chris is next... he's safe also.

On to Paris, who looks a little concerned after making last week's bottom two. Ryan reveals that she's also in this week's bottom two.

Paris Bennett waits anxiously, only for Ryan Seacrest to confirm that she is in this week's bottom 2.
Ryan Seacrest trails behind Paris Bennett, holding her mike pack as she closes out her reprise of Prince's "Kiss".

Ryan calls Paris down onto the stage to reprise her performance of "Kiss". She just needs to take care of one detail, so she pops her chewing gum out of her mouth and hands it to Ryan!

Paris gives a good, confident reprise performance but it will be remembered mostly for its comical ending when her mike pack falls away from its fastening on her back and dangles to the floor. Ryan dances behind her trying to grab the thing and prevent it from disconnecting. Paris shows what a trouper she is by carrying on as if everything is normal, although she does have a good laugh about it after the song is over.

After another set of commercials Ryan heads back to the bench to reveal whether it's Elliott or Katharine who forms the other half of tonight's bottom two. Both look as though they expect the worst, Katharine links Elliott for comfort but eventually hears the words "America voted... Kat... you are safe, Elliott you're in the bottom two".

Seconds later Elliott is on stage belting out a reprise of his On Broadway performance. He does better than last night, but we still don't think this song suits him somehow. Paula clearly does, and her exaggerated dance moves are a clear signal of her support for the man who made her cry during last week's show. The song finishes and Paris greets Elliott with a big heartfelt hug.

Katharine McPhee links arms with Elliot Yamin as they both wait for Ryan Seacrest to reveal which of them is in this week's bottom two.
Ryan doesn't relish his next duty, "We love both of you by the way. This is a very tough moment." He continues, "America voted Paris and Elliott..." Ryan places a hand on Elliott's shoulder, "...and Elliott you may sit down you are safe. Paris leaves us tonight."
Screams are heard as the audience rise to their feet to applaud Princess P. The panel applaud too, but predictably Simon remains conspicuously seated.
Paris Bennett gives Stevie Wonder a big hug during rehearsals for final 12 week. Stevie is convinced he "can see a great future for her".

Paris smiles and waves at the audience as the video montage of her Idol journey starts up on the big screen. We're first reminded of her brilliant 'Take Five' audition. Also shown are numerous flashbacks to this years celebrity guest mentors heaping Paris with praise...

  • Rod Stewart - "For seventeen she's astounding, tremendous".
  • Barry Manilow - "I was blown away by Paris".
  • Stevie Wonder - "I see a great future for her".
  • Brian May - "The thing about Paris is she's damn good".
Andrea Bocelli is also shown hugging Paris. If he were hugging her right now he'd probably burst into a few bars of "Time To Say Goodbye (Con Te Partiro)". However, protocol demands that Paris sing us out with a song title nearly as poignant, so she takes to the stage to end her Idol journey with a reprise of last night's  performance of "Be Without You".
Paris Bennett sings herself out of Idol tonight with a reprise of Mary J Blige's "Be Without You".
Amazingly for once there are no tears from Paris, nor need there be, at seventeen she's made 5th place in American 5, it's quite an achievement.
