Chris Daughtry turns in a credible rock rendition of Shinedown's "I Dare You", although he does seem to strain his vocal during parts of the song.

Chris' Billboard chart selection is another dark rock number. This time he stays rooted to the same spot for the entire performance. The vocal intensity ramps up steadily throughout the song and by the end Chris' voice sounds like it's cracking a little as he screams out the lyric.

It's a riveting rock routine, but although we enjoy it we also think it's a bit too similar to Chris' performance of "Renegade" earlier in the show. Consequently Chris has missed a chance to show alternate shades of himself during his two sets tonight. However, judged in isolation, this is still a good performance from Chris..
The judges are kind of neutral in their assessment and both Randy and Simon express concern about those cracks in Chris' voice. It turns out that Chris is also concerned, he reveals to Ryan that he's sung Shinedown's song 5 times today and admits that he's probably pushed it too much.

Panel-Bites:

Ryan Seacrest:  (Introduction) Time for the rocker's second set. He's picked a Shinedown number from the mainstream rock chart. With "I Dare You" here's Chris Daughtry again...

Chris sings...

¯ Hello ¯ Are you still chasing ¯ The memories in shadows ¯ Some stay young ¯ Some grow old ¯ Come alive ¯ There are thoughts unclear ¯ You can never hide ¯ Even in madness ¯ I know you still believe ¯ Paint me your canvas so I become ¯ What you could never be ¯ I dare you to tell me to walk through the fire ¯ Wear my soul and call me a liar ¯ I dare you to tell me to walk through the fire ¯ Dare you to tell me ¯ I dare you to ¯ Hello ¯ Hello ¯ I dare you to tell me ¯ I dare you to ¯ I dare you to tell me ¯ I dare you to ¯

(Cheers and applause)

Randy Jackson:  (Laughs) A'right, so you know, I can already tell dawg that like your voice is startin' to give out a little bit. Songs a little high. I'm not sure I love that song for you, but ah, it was just a'ight for me baby. Just a'ight.

Chris: I understand, I understand.

Paula Abdul:  Yeah. Maybe the song wasn't my favorite but... I love you.

Simon Cowell:  Whoopee! It was er, not a great song and... (Touches his throat) ...your voice is going Chris. I mean it really felt like it was gonna give way half-way through that. I don't know if it was the wrong key or what, but you've got to watch yourself.

Chris: It's been a long day. (Laughs)

Simon Cowell:  But, you know what? Great first song, so you're gonna be fine.

Chris: Thank you so much.

Ryan Seacrest:  (As Chris joins him on stage) Chris Daughtry! (Shakes Chris' hand) All right man. Did you feel strain on your voice during that one?

Chris: Ahm, I think that's like the fifth time I've done that song today, so...

Ryan Seacrest:  That's true. You rehearsed it a couple of times.

Chris: Um, it's... it's... You know, we're goin' all the time, so... um, I probably pushed it a little more than I should've, but...

Ryan Seacrest:  But about this stage of the competition, fatigue's startin' to set in a little bit?

Chris: What's that?

Ryan Seacrest:  Did fatigue start to set in a little bit about this stage?

Chris: I think so. Um, you know we're singin'... I'm probably singin' more than I've ever sung in my life, so, you know I gotta pace myself.

Ryan Seacrest:  And you wanna keep on singin'.

Chris: Absolutely.

Ryan Seacrest:  (Gives out the voting numbers) Good luck Chris. (Shakes Chris' hand)

Chris: Absolutely.

Ryan Seacrest:  Thank you my friend.
