Katharine McPhee belts out "Against All Odds", her birth year song from 1984.
Katharine seems a bit embarrassed talking to Ryan Seacrest about last week's wardrobe malfunction. She's sure many Idol viewers will have played back her button popping moment over and over again.
Somewhat ironically she's now up on the Idol stage belting out the lyric "Take A Look At Me Now"! We do, and we like what we see, even if Katharine herself labels her outfit as a "trash bag". In reality it's an elegant black Dior strapless dress harnessed strategically by 3 leather belts.
So, security is tight and there are no buttons to pop this time. Unfortunately though, this performance doesn't push too many of our buttons either.
It sounds like Katharine's chosen the wrong key for the song, with quite a few notes flattening out. Overall she doesn't sound terrible, because her core vocal has a lot of quality, but this definitely isn't one of the great Katharine McPhee performances.
Simon seems to disagree and calls it one of Katharine's best performances! A moment later though he corrects himself and says it wasn't. So, it's official, Simon Cowell makes mistakes! Hard to believe isn't it?

Panel-Bites:

Ryan Seacrest:  (Introduction. Chats with Katharine on the stools) Katharine McPhee set to sing in just a second.

Katharine: (Waving with both hands) Hi!

Ryan Seacrest:  Okay, we have to retrace our steps for a moment. Last week, the yellow dress and we had a wardrobe malfunction, didn't we?

Katharine: (Embarrassed laugh) Did we?

Ryan Seacrest:  Well you... you lost a button.

Katharine: I did! And I... I didn't even know, so I hope I didn't offend anybody!

Ryan Seacrest:  A lot of people went back on their systems and watched that moment over and over again.

Katharine: I'm sure they Tivo'd. I'm sure they did. (Laughs)

Ryan Seacrest:  Half of America now knows you wear boxers, so...

Katharine: (Throws her head back) Noooo! (Laughs)

Ryan Seacrest:  No, not at all. Everything was fine. Ah, and you're strapped into that nicely...

Katharine: This is...

Ryan Seacrest:  Okay, good.

Katharine: This is all good...

Ryan Seacrest:  I was told to ask by the network.

Katharine: I feel like I'm in a trash bag today.

Ryan Seacrest:  (Laughs) It looks much better than a trash bag.

Katharine: Thank you.

Ryan Seacrest:  Uh, okay... here is Katharine as a very young lady. Take a look...

Intro clip...

Katharine: I was born in Los Angeles, California in 1984 and when I came out in the delivery room I did not make a sound. I didn't cry. And even as a young child I was very serious, but it's ironic now today, because I didn't want to make a sound when I came out, and yet I've chosen a profession that's so loud, like a singer.

Katharine sings...

¯ How can I just let you walk away ¯ Just let you leave without a trace ¯ When I stand here taking every breath with you ¯ Ooh-ooh ¯ You're the only one who really knew me at all ¯ So take a look at me now ¯ Well there's just an empty space ¯ And there's nothing left here ¯ To remind me ¯ Just the memory of your face ¯ Take a look at me now ¯ 'Cause there's just an empty space ¯ But to wait for you ¯ Is all I can do ¯ And that's what I've got to fa-a-a-a-a-ace ¯ Take a loo-oook ¯ 'Cause I'm still standing here ¯ But you coming back to me is against all odds ¯ It's the chance I've gotta take ¯ Oh take a look at me n-oooow ¯

(Cheers and applause )

Randy Jackson:  Yo. (Laughs) A'ight so listen. Check it out. You look amazing. I dunno if the key was exactly right for you. There's some little problems there in the beginning but I thought it got okay at the end.

Katharine: Yeah.

Randy Jackson:  It was okay at the end.

Katharine: Okay.

Randy Jackson:  I dunno if the key was too low.

Katharine: (Smiling) Thank you.

Paula Abdul:  Um, yes you do look stunning that's a lovely dress.

Katharine: Thank you. (Laughs)

Paula Abdul:  Um, not my favorite performance from you. Erm, yeah you... see what I love about you...

Katharine: I always know! (Grins)

Paula Abdul:  You know! You know.

Katharine: Yeah!

Randy Jackson:  Yeah, yeah. That's good.

Paula Abdul:  I like that. I like that.

Simon Cowell:  Well Katharine as you know, I got it completely wrong last week and I did apologize. However, tonight in parts it was a mess and the song ran away from you basically. Um, so I agree with Paula and Randy it was by far one of your best performances, but you got two songs so you're a lucky girl.

Katharine: Thank you.

Ryan Seacrest:  (Joins Katharine on stage) Katharine McPhee! So during the song at what point were you a little nervous about losing it?

Katharine: Um, in the... actually from the very beginning I was like not sure if I could hear myself and... so I... I... I always know.

Ryan Seacrest:  A tough one to sing?

Katharine: No actually it's... I don't think... well sometimes... I dunno... (Laughs) ...I dunno.

Ryan Seacrest:  "Yes, it's almost impossible Ryan". Ah, if you wanna vote for Kat...

Katharine: (Smiling) When you're nervous anything's difficult I guess.

Ryan Seacrest:  (Gives out the voting numbers)

Simon Cowell:  (Off mike) Did I say it was one of your best performances?

Katharine: (Shakes her head) No.

Simon Cowell:  Because if I did I didn't mean it.

Ryan Seacrest:  Hold on, hold on, hold on? Is his mike on?

Simon Cowell:  (Voice now miked) ...It wasn't one of your best performances.

Katharine: (Shakes her head) No.

Simon Cowell:  I did... If I said it was one of your best performances. It wasn't.

Katharine: No.

Simon Cowell:  That's what I was trying to say.

Ryan Seacrest:  Somebody went to the bar before the show.

Randy Jackson:  Ryan! Ryan!

Katharine: I didn't think so...

Randy Jackson:  Keep goin' Ryan.

Katharine: I didn't think he said that. Oh gosh, we're going back to next week... last week!

Ryan Seacrest:  Is that your final answer?

Simon Cowell:  Yes. (Laughter)

Randy Jackson:  That was good Ryan, good.

Ryan Seacrest:  (Gives out the numbers) Katharine McPhee ladies and gentlemen! (Cheers)

Katharine: Thank you.
