Carrie Underwood (Contestant's Choice - American Idol 4, Final 3)

Carrie Underwood impreses Clive Davis with her 'contestant's' song choice tonight.
Interestingly Carrie has chosen to sing an Air Supply number that was a hit back in 1983. Perhaps it's one of those songs that she grew up on as a baby, running around wearing those headphones!
It's a power ballad with a bit of a country feel to it. She sings it really well and has an appealing hint of raunchiness in her delivery. She's a bit reminiscent of the great Bonnie Tyler as she stands up on stage belting the vocal into submission. In fact Jim Steinman, the writer of this song also wrote one of Bonnie's major hits 'Holding Out For A Hero'.
It's great to watch Carrie singing songs like these, she sings them really well and shows off a bit of edginess. Clive Davis loves it! Well he would of course... he executive-produced the song with Air Supply!

Panel-Bites:

Ryan Seacrest:  Now, time for farm girl. She's chosen 'Making Love Out Of Nothing At All', it is by Air Supply. Give it up once again for Carrie Underwood.

Carrie sings...

Clive Davis:  Carrie that song choice was very special to me. I shared that number one hit with Air Supply. I love the fact that you threw yourself into it. You did it with conviction. Your voice soared. Great job.

Carrie:  Thank you. (Applause - Carrie smiles)

Randy Jackson:  I said it before I'll say it again... Carrie, you can definitely, definitely sing. Every time you come up there and open your mouth, I'm looking forward to hearing you sing because you can blow dude! (Applause)

Carrie:  Thank you very much.

Paula Abdul:  It was a great choice of song because you really got to really power your voice, which you do so brilliantly and effortlessly. Great... you sang it great... unbelievable.

Carrie:  Thank you. Thank you.

Simon Cowell:  Carrie, you... you've had a good night tonight. I think you ... I think you sang the first song better. Ahm, I wouldn't have liked to have followed Bo... (Laughter)

Carrie:  (Jokey) No!

Simon Cowell:  ...after that... right. Ahm, I think you may have pushed that song too much in the middle. That's what it sounded like to me. It was straining a bit. They don't agree but...

Randy Jackson:  Noooo... no!

Simon Cowell:  ...I don't know.

Ryan Seacrest:  You decide at home. Carrie's numbers ...
