I Don't Mean to Be Rude, But...: Backstage Gossip from American Idol & the Secrets that Can Make You a Star

Carrie Underwood's 'Philly Sound' performance isn't her best, which in part is due to a rather heavy handed band arrangement.

Before we hear the first Gamble and Huff number of tonight we get to see the heartfelt message that Carrie has sent back to her sisters Shanna and Stephanie. She chokes as she sends her love back and thanks them for their support.

Having already watched Vonzell shed tears after her first song, it's just another reminder of what an intense emotional experience this 'Idol journey' is. This little song contest changes lives irreversibly. The sudden loss of control must be kind of scary, so it's small wonder that Carrie appreciates her family's support so much.

Thankfully Carrie doesn't choke while singing the Philly sound, but it's some way off her best. Her vocal is there but the intensity is technical rather than emotional. She just doesn't seem to be feeling the song.
Simon Cowell is right to pan the band's arrangement, which was kind of heavy and mushy, but Carrie still didn't perform the song like we know she can. The upshot is 3 pretty negative critiques from the panel. Yes, even Paula tells her "...it just didn't work for you."
What is nice though is Carrie's reaction. Accepting the panel's opinions, she makes a little 'oh well, looks like I goofed!' kind of shrug and even manages to laugh a little. Amidst all the Idol hullabaloo Carrie is clearly keeping both her feet on the ground.

Panel-Bites:

Carrie:  (A message to her sisters...) Shanna, Stephanie. (Choking with emotion) You guys are much more than my sisters. You guys are my friends and I love you so much and thank you for supporting me. You guys mean the world to me and I love you very much.

Carrie sings...

Randy Jackson:  ...So listen... It was one of those things... For me tonight it just didn't work. It just...it, I dunno... it just didn't quite... (Audience boos loudly) I was waiting for you to get on track... It never got on track for me, pitchwise. It just didn't really quite work.

Carrie:  That's okay. (Laughs)

Paula Abdul:  Carrie you've been... you've been pretty much right on the money on everything. This just was not the right song for you, and not... I dunno... it just didn't work for you, I don't think.

Carrie:  Okay.

Simon Cowell:  Carrie, this is one of the best pop songs ever written in my opinion. However...

Paula Abdul:  I agree.

Simon Cowell:  ...that was an appalling arrangement. I'm going to blame the band here. It didn't suit you. It was boring, lethargic, and it was a complete and utter mess in my opinion. Sorry.

Carrie:  All righty (Laughs and shrugs)... Okay!

Ryan Seacrest:  Carrie Underwood! Come on up. As she says 'okay' on that note... Do you think she's the next American Idol? (Big Cheer) That is your decision, that is why you vote.... (Ryan gives out the numbers)
