I Don't Mean to Be Rude, But...: Backstage Gossip from American Idol & the Secrets that Can Make You a Star

Vonzell Solomon (Country Music - American Idol 4, Final 4, Song 1 of 2)

Vonzell Solomon can't hold back the sobs after Paula Abdul asks her how she is tonight.
Vonzell's bros 'Gabriel and Kendall' fire off supportive shots to Simon Cowell "'Baby V' Vonzell is the next American Idol, you'd better know that!"
Vonzell Solomon's performance lacks her usual spark and vitality tonight.

Simon watches their video with good humor. However, the moment Vonzell begins to sing, it's clear that she's not feeling like an American Idol tonight.

Her opening bars are uncharacteristically shaky, and although she picks up the vocal as the song continues, her usual spark and passion seem sadly absent.

It's not a bad performance, it's just not a great one, and we've come to expect greatness from 'Baby V' during these finals. Even Randy can't explode into his usual enthusiasms, although he gives Vonzell 'props' for continuing to attempt the hardest songs.
It's when Paula asks "How are you feeling" that we realize there may be an emotional reason for her dip in form. Vonzell's brave smile cracks a little and tears are shed as she reveals "...I've just had a really rough day today... but you know, you've just got to pull through it. And I get a little choked up when I see my dad over there....". She smiles again; it's clear that she doesn't really want to cry, but she can't help it.
We aren't told what has upset Vonzell tonight, but Ryan and the panel are clearly sympathetic. Simon even foregoes his critique!
Whatever it is, it's bad timing for Vonzell. The performance has done little to help her make it to this year's Idol top 3.

Panel-Bites:

Kendall (Vonzell's Brother): Vonzell, stay strong baby! The home team fighting for you. I know you can do it. Top 3. Let's do it.

Gabriel (Vonzell's Brother): And Simon, watch out! 'Baby V' Vonzell is the next American Idol!

Kendall: Yeah! (Laughs)

Gabriel: Better know that! (Both brothers laugh)

Vonzell sings...

Randy Jackson:  All right, Vonzell. It started a little kinda rough... just a little bit, the first couple of bars. You know, I mean, for once, I dunno... this song felt very slow to me... like almost too slow, for some weird reason. But... in the end you always bring it home. The thing that I love about you is that you always, every night pick the most difficult song to sing. So you know it's like a gymnastics contest. (Vonzell laughs) You got everybody doing things, and they're cool... but wait for the one that's going to pick the most difficult song to sing. But you did your thing. To say that, I mean you really still did your thing in the end.

Vonzell:  Thank you Randy. (Cheers)

Paula Abdul:  How are you feeling tonight? (Vonzell leans forward to check what she heard) How are you feeling tonight?

Vonzell:  Ahm, you know... I just had a really rough day today. (Fighting back tears)

Paula Abdul:  It's okay sweetheart. It's okay honey.

Vonzell:  But you know, you just gotta pull through it. (Smiling) ...And I get a little choked-up when I see my dad over there. So... (Laughs)

Vonzell's Dad: (From the audience) I love you baby! I love you Vonzell!

Paula Abdul:  You're a beautiful performer. You're a beautiful performer. You're heartfelt...

Vonzell:  Thank you.

Paula Abdul:  You know, you're heartfelt... you... you wear your heart on your sleeve. You are a beautiful performer... and you've come all this way, and your grace and your dignity shows every night that you're on that stage. (Applause)

Vonzell:  (Becoming tearful) Thank you very much.

Simon Cowell:  You looked and you sounded incredibly nervous tonight and it's the first time I've seen that in weeks. Ahm, and obviously you're very emotional, ahm, so I think I'll leave it there. (Vonzell cries)

Ryan Seacrest:  Vonzell! (He walks extra quick, extending his arm to greet Vonzell. She turns slightly to dry her eyes) Come here darling! Come on Vonzy! You okay there? Your dad just said he loves you!

Vonzell:  I love you too daddy!

Vonzell's Dad: I love you baby. Stay strong baby!

Ryan Seacrest:  (Announces the numbers) ... It is emotional isn't it?

Vonzell:  Very emotional!

Ryan Seacrest:  All set for the next song?

Vonzell:  (Smiles) Yes!

Ryan Seacrest:  She's coming back ladies and gentlemen. Stand by for more Vonzell in just a few!

Vonzell:  (Wipes her eye) Thank you! (Blows a kiss and waves to her family)
