I Don't Mean to Be Rude, But...: Backstage Gossip from American Idol & the Secrets that Can Make You a Star

Bo Bice (Country Music - American Idol 4, Final 4, Song 1 of 2)

Bo Bice's first number tonight is nicely understated, but not so nicely underrated by the panel!
Mom and pop, Nancy and Earle, video-send their love and good wishes to their baby Bo-boy. Nancy says "I can't wait to see what comes out of your mouth next."
Luckily we can't see too much coming out of Bo's mouth tonight! We hear plenty though, and it sounds pretty good. Bo is kind of understated tonight, but in a carefree way which very much suits the song. His voice is also a perfect match for this number, in fact Bo's vocal tone isn't a million miles away from Travis Tritt's.
Randy and Paula aren't overawed with Bo's song choice. Paula feels that he should choose more challenging songs, Simon describes the performance as 'boring' and 'lazy'. He seems to be equating 'laid-back' with 'lazy'... and as for 'boring', well that's no surprise considering that Simon has previously admitted that he's just not into country music!
Bo must be thinking 'Grrrr! Simon!', instead he does the right thing, which is to smile! He's got his fabulously feisty grrrr-anny ready to fight his battles for him if needs be. We can't hear her words as she's shouting to Simon, but they seem to be about a shoe, a pounding action and Simon's head!Bo Bice's grandma has a few words with Simon Cowell!

Panel-Bites:

Earle (Bo's Dad): You're doing a great job. I'm proud of you. And be happy at what you do, and go do it! ... But you do it so well.

Nancy (Bo's Mom): And I love you sweetheart, and I miss you very much. I can't wait to see what comes out of your mouth next! (Nancy smiles)

Bo sings...

Randy Jackson:  Yo Bo! ... Hey man! So, all right, so I mean, you know you already in the dawg pound so we got that settled... right. You know you got that, right? It's another great performance. I did not 'love' the song... it wasn't 'exciting' song for me. But still man, you doin' your thing man.

Bo:  Thanks.

Randy Jackson:  ...I mean I...I, there's nothing more... I mean you're brilliant...

Bo:  Thanks.

Randy Jackson:  Brilliant.

Paula Abdul:  So, we always say that we love you, and we do. I think now... now's the time, because we do enjoy you... to pick songs that... that even you can feel that you're rising to the challenge. Because... 'cos that song was... ahm, it was like easy-feeling but now like... we're right now at the end Bo, you've gotta pick songs that are going to really challenge you.

Bo:  Thanks Paula. (laughs)

Paula Abdul:  Having said that. Love ya. Love you!

Bo:  Thank you Paula.

Randy Jackson:  Cowell? Simon?

Simon Cowell:  What Paula was trying to say there...

Randy Jackson:  Oh please! Here we go!

Simon Cowell:  Was that was very boring. (Paula laughs)

Bo:  Thank you!

Simon Cowell:  It was. It was, and it was a... (Boos) ... It was a very lazy, uninspiring performance. A very boring song, and it looked as if you were doing a sort of, almost like a...a jam in a local club! And...

Randy Jackson:  (Surprised) Really?

Paula Abdul:  I know what...(muffled)

Randy Jackson:  Wow!

Bo:  That's cool.

Simon Cowell:  It wasn't great

Bo:  I like... (muffled) ... in a local club, man.

Simon Cowell:  Bo, Bo! It wasn't great!

Ryan Seacrest:  Bo Bice! Well done baby. Hey, ah (To Simon) ...just... I just want to warn you, if you're gonna say things like that, be careful, because his grandma's behind you! (Simon turns around) ...And she is going to leap out of that chair and strangle you if you keep acting that way!

(Bo's grandma is shown practicing her pummel action, ready for Simon. Grinning broadly, she then grabs Bo's mom's leg and reveals her other weapon, 'the stiletto'! Bo laughs out loud.)
