Scott Savol sings a tender rendition of 'Dance With My Father' but lacks a bit of passion.
Scott always chooses great songs, tonight he's chosen Luther's 'Dance With My Father', a bit of a tear-jerker.
It's kind of poignant when we remember his words about his dad during his Cleveland audition.
This evening we are introduced to Scott's mom and dad. Scott remarks "we don't get along all the time, but the love is there", and watching the clip the words ring true.
Scott gives the song a very tender treatment. Overall, it sounds good, but it's just a little too tender and the performance could do with a bit more intensity and passion.
Scott's beautiful tone is also scarred by a few badly strained notes. It kind of suggests his vocal chords may be suffering some wear and tear. Perhaps that may someway explain the shortfall in intensity tonight. It could be that Scott is deliberately singing within himself in order to avoid battering his voice box.
Simon recommends Scott packs his suitcase tonight. He may be right, those off-key moments have left Scott looking very vulnerable.

At home with Scott:

Scott:  I live in Shaker Heights, which is a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. We're the average American family. We don't get along all the time, but the love is there.

Cathy (Scott's Mom): (Cooking) Gonna eat good today!

Eddie (Scott's Dad): Scott's the sympathetic one out of all the kids.

Cathy: He's actually I think...'sensitive', is the word.

Eddie: Sensitive, yeah. He started under the kitchen table singing "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus."

Scott:  I guess it was a song I liked as a kid, and I would sing it... I'd sit under the table so nobody could see me.

Cathy: He was a great kid. We always thought he'd be a priest... (We see a photo where Scott is dressed as an altar-boy.) ...but...

Eddie: Yeah.

Cathy: I guess being a singer is not so bad. (Laughs)

Cathy: (Now sitting outside the family home, with Scott's son, Brandon on her knee) You going to sing like daddy?

Brandon: (He's a cute kid!) Yeah.

Cathy: Okay!

Scott:  My son Brandon is 4 years old and I want to give him the kind of life that... that I didn't have.

Eddie: We never had an abundance of money to give our kids. We pinched and scraped and everything. We gave them what we could.

Scott:  I didn't have a bad life, but there weren't too many days where we got to get things that we wanted.

Cathy: He's had a lot of curveballs thrown his way over the last ten years.

Eddie: A lot of them.

Cathy: And he manages to just step back and hit it out of the park.

Scott:  I feel I represent the people who get up in the morning to go work eight hours a day.

Cathy: He's the average Joe.

Scott:  I mean, If you went to Cleveland, you'd probably see a million of me walking around.

Cathy: He's the heart and soul of America.

Panel-Bites:

Scott sings...

Randy Jackson:  Yo, Scotty. Scotty, what's up, baby?

Scott:  What's up, man? What's up?

Randy Jackson:  So ahh, for me, dawg, I mean that song man... the song and just the version tonight, dude, I think it's your weakest performance in weeks, dude. For me it was very pitchy all over the place to me. (Groans, Scott nods to acknowledge Randy.)

Paula Abdul:  Scott, you sang very... very pleasant. You always have a pleasant voice. I think the song didn't do you justice with... with emotional highs and tapping into the heart strings.

Simon: I'd pack your suitcase tonight. (A few groans)

Paula Abdul:  Oh, Simon.

Ryan Seacrest:  Harsh!... Harsh, harsh from Cowell. Scott Savol!
