I Don't Mean to Be Rude, But...: Backstage Gossip from American Idol & the Secrets that Can Make You a Star

Anwar Robinson ('70s Dance Classics - American Idol 4, Final 7)

Anwar Robinson
Song: September  Check out 'September' at Amazon.com (Earth, Wind And Fire  Check out 'Earth, Wind And Fire' at Amazon.com)

Anwar Robinson masters the art of singing while dancing during his performance of Earth, Wind and Fire's 'September' on the Final 7 show.

Anwar delivers one of his better uptempo vocals. In the second half of the number he dances energetically as he sings, but somehow he manages to stay on key and deliver a big finish.

All that working out in the gym seems to have paid off because Anwar doesn't look at all out of breath after finishing the number!

Anwar entertains, but he still lacks the wow factor that showed up in his early performances.

Panel-Bites:

Anwar:  I was born in the late '70s, and I also chose a song from the late '70s. 'September' by Earth, Wind And Fire... The one thing I know about the '70s for sure is the fashion was off the hook. You know, everybody was fly. The dance moves were like 'The Bus Stop!' ...You know, the move from 'Saturday Night Fever' that John Travolta did. Everybody was hip and everything was hot.

Anwar sings...

Randy Jackson:  All right. Another... another good Anwar performance. Started a little bit pitchy, but I mean, was the bomb at the end. A lot of energy. Great, man. It was good. It was good, dude. It was good. (Applause)

Anwar:  (Laughs) Thanks Randy.

Paula Abdul:  (To Randy) You've been... you've been somewhat hard on him when he's done some uptempo performances... (To Anwar) but I've got to tell you, this was awesome. You had fun. This was a great song, a great performance. You were in the moment up on stage, and you threw all caution to the wind. It was a great performance from you.

Anwar:  Thank you. (Cheers)

Simon Cowell:  Anwar, I don't think it was as good as Paula thinks. Ahm, I think it was ahm...

Randy Jackson:  Why? Why, why, why?

Simon Cowell:  As usual, it was a very good ending. But I have been to the '70s kind of revue musicals before when someone gets up and just does a song from the '70s. And I don't think it was a million miles away from that. I don't think it was a winning performance.

Paula Abdul:  Yes, it was.

Randy Jackson:  (Disagreeing with Simon) Naaaaa!

Ryan Seacrest:  Anwar Robinson. Now, you have some history with that song, don't you?

Anwar:  Yeah. Ahm, my band did it... ahm...'Perfect Combination', and I did it for a number of reasons, just thinking about people back at home. Today's my aunt's birthday. Happy birthday, aunt Veechie (?). Love you very much. And it's just like, you know... it's about the family getting into the groove and just thinking about people instead of thinking about you know, just doing it technically correct. I just wanted to have fun tonight.

Ryan Seacrest:  Well, Paula, I recognized that last move from the 'Cold-Hearted Snake' video!

Paula Abdul: (Laughs)

Randy Jackson: Ahhhh!

Ryan Seacrest: Isn't that right? If you want to vote for Anwar...
