I Don't Mean to Be Rude, But...: Backstage Gossip from American Idol & the Secrets that Can Make You a Star

Carrie Underwood ('70s Dance Classics - American Idol 4, Final 7)

Carrie Underwood
Song: MacArthur Park  Check out 'MacArthur Park' at Amazon.com (Donna Summer  Check out 'Donna Summer' at Amazon.com - Orig. Richard Harris  Check out 'Richard Harris' at Amazon.com)

Carrie Underwood sings MacArthur Park, although she admits she doesn't know what it's all about!
For a gal who has no idea what she's singing about, Carrie sure does a good job tonight. Mind you, if Carrie does understand the lyric of the song she probably doesn't want to admit it on national TV! Simon will remember that the same song caused a bit of a stir when sung by Rowetta Satchell, one of the contestants on Simon's UK talent show The X Factor.
It's quite a demanding vocal but Carrie nails it so well that the only criticism she gets is over her dress sense.
We have to agree with Simon, who compares her outfit to a cross between Barbie and Stepford Wives. Carrie could also improve on the way she moves across the stage tonight, it's more like shuffling than dancing.
These are minor gripes however, Carrie's overall performance is very good - she even makes me believe that someone left their cake out in the rain. Why they left it there I don't know, but I am sure they did!

Panel-Bites:

Carrie:  This week I am singing "Macarthur Park" By Donna Summer. And when I heard it was going to be '70s dance week I thought "Oh, man, I'm in trouble!"... There are two reasons. 'A': I don't really know that much about '70s dance music, and 'B': We really don't have any nightclubs in Checotah, Oklahoma. So ah, the most dancing experience I ever got was in my room on my bed in my pajamas just cutting a rug up by myself.

Carrie sings...

Randy Jackson:  Carrie. Yo, man, you know what? Dude, I got to give you the official welcome to the dawg pound. That was an unbelievable vocal. (Applause) You are definitely one of the best singers in this competition. Brilliant! That was beautiful, man. Beautiful. Excellent. Excellent. (Applause)

Carrie: (Smiling) Thank you.

Girls In Audience: We love you Carrie!

Paula Abdul:  They love you, Carrie! They love you. I've got to tell you, "Wow!" on that last note. You held it out for as long as I think any Idol's ever held a note. Simon turned 53! ...On that last note. (Laughter from audience - stony faced Simon stares at Paula!)

Randy Jackson:  I thought he was 58.

Paula Abdul:  Bravo. Bravo, bravo. (Paula claps... Audience applause)

Simon Cowell: (Smiling) Well, you sang it very well. Ah, if I may, 'the styling'. I have to discuss this look. Because it's like Barbie meets the Stepford Wives. (Gasps and Laughter from the audience - Carrie smiles.)

Randy Jackson:  What?

Simon Cowell: You know, and it is very old-fashioned...(Boos)

Randy Jackson:  What?

Simon Cowell:  ...It is very old-fashioned, and you're too old to be looking like that. Leave that to Paula.

Paula Abdul: (Laughs)

Randy Jackson: Oh, my God!

Ryan Seacrest:  Carrie Underwood. Come on, come on over... The styling Simon. May I?

Carrie: (Smiling) If that's all you gotta say!...

Simon Cowell:  (Raises his palms)

Ryan Seacrest:  ...It's like the '70s meets the '80s. Let's work on that, okay?

Simon Cowell:  Ha haa.

Ryan Seacrest:  ...Don't pick on her. Work on yourself first.

Simon Cowell:  Ha haa.

Randy Jackson: Yes, amen. Yesss!

Ryan Seacrest:  (Applause) If you'd like to vote for Carrie Underwood and she's your idol, I'm going to tell you how to do it here in a second. So song selection... that song listening to the words, it's about a cake in the rain?

Carrie:  (Laughing) I don't know.

Ryan Seacrest:  Why'd you... ?

Carrie:  (Looking a little embarrassed!) Something like that!

Ryan Seacrest:  Yeah, why? (Laughing and spluttering.)

Carrie:  A cake.

Ryan Seacrest:  Something about...

Carrie:  Some old dude...

Ryan Seacrest:  ...the rain and a cake.

Carrie:  ...playing Chinese checkers. I don't know. (Laughter)

Ryan Seacrest:  Well why... why did you pick that song, then?

Carrie:  Ahm, It was just... it's great vocally and you know, Donna Summer, she's...she's the girl right there... and ah... it's just a great song, despite the words. It's just different. It's different. It's a different song.

Ryan Seacrest:  Well, forget the cheese factor here, but if Carrie's the icing on your cake, vote for her... I was talking about 'my' cheese factor...
