I Don't Mean to Be Rude, But...: Backstage Gossip from American Idol & the Secrets that Can Make You a Star

Constantine Maroulis ('70s Dance Classics - American Idol 4, Final 7)

Constantine Maroulis
Song: Nights On Broadway  Check out 'Nights On Broadway' at Amazon.com (The Bee Gees  Check out 'The Bee Gees' at Amazon.com)

Constantine Maroulis listens to a positive overall reaction from the panel tonight.
Constantine gets things rolling this evening. The performance is less dramatic than last week's Bohemian Rhapsody. In fact, the most dramatic thing about Constantine tonight is his make-up, which seems a bit overcaked and eye-liner heavy. Nevertheless there are plenty of those smoldering looks into the camera.
Vocally he is competent rather than outstanding. The vocals of some of his fans do stand out however as they yell their support during Paula's critique of his performance.
No-one expected him to match the crazy standard he set last week, and naturally he doesn't. However, still it's a decent performance overall.

Panel-Bites:

Constantine:  As the whole world knows now, I was born in the '70s, and of course dance music was huge then... I think of the whole era and the dancing. I think of... finger pointing. Lots of space, lots of glam. Made people just want to boogie. You know what I mean? The Bee Gees epitomized that era. So I decided to sing "Nights On Broadway", me being from New York and all. So I'm really looking forward to it.

Constantine sings...

Randy Jackson:  Constantine! Yo, man, that was... that was a good choice man, for this week. That was a good choice. I mean, you're kind of in the zone now. But I was watching you... I still feel like I'm watching like a great Las Vegas performance. I still don't really feel... I... I don't

Paula Abdul:  What?

Randy Jackson:  I don't really... I don't really... I don't get originality. I just get... You got the jacket on, it's tryin' to be Travolta!... It was all right, but it's not like "Oh, my God!" ... It was all right.

Constantine:  Thank you. (Audience groans)

Paula Abdul:  Constantine, everything about you in the past few weeks is "Oh my God!" Everything. It's like... (Applause) ...And you know what else? It's like you have a habit of picking the right song for you. You mix it up with... with just the right mix of theatrics, rock...

Randy Jackson:  Vegas.

Paula Abdul:  ...pop. And you know what? You've got the sexiness...

Constantine:  (Grinning) Hey, man, I'll take that job. I'll take that job in Vegas.

Paula Abdul:  ...but let me tell you something. You've got stage presence beyond...And... and you're going to be... whatever happens, you're going to be selling lots of records. (Applause)

Girls In Audience: We love Constantine!

Paula Abdul: See! See! See! That's what it is!

Simon Cowell:  (To Paula) We're going to be so over.... (To Constantine) You're definitely... You're definitely on a roll Constantine. Uhm, I think that if I was watching this back in isolation and this was the tape I'd seen for the first time... and I've sort of used this analogy before... I think the performance was akin to a waiter in a ghastly spanish nightclub.

Paula Abdul:  Oh, please.

Randy Jackson:  In Vegas... In Vegas!

Simon Cowell:  I do. No not Vegas. No, I'm being serious. You go to Magaluf or somewhere in Spain, and the waiter gets up and performs at the end of the evening, it reminded me a bit of that to be honest with you..

Paula Abdul:  You know what?

Randy Jackson:  Guadaloupe.

Paula Abdul:  Look at the fans he has...

Simon Cowell:  Not Guadaloupe. Spain.

Paula Abdul:  Look at the fans he has. It's amazing. (Cheers)

Ryan Seacrest:  Constantine Maroulis, America! Is he your man? Let me ask you. Last week Paula said you're the one to beat. How did the other contestants treat you during the week after something like that's said on the air?

Constantine:  Listen, we're all such a big family at this point, we all support each other so much that we...

Ryan Seacrest:  No, but seriously. (Laughter)

Constantine:  No, honestly. And me being sort of like the older brother. You know, I'm the oldest guy here. But ah, you know, we all just support each other. So it's cool when someone says somethin' like that to you, and we're happy for each other... so...

Ryan Seacrest:  Well good luck!

Constantine:  But vote for me.

Ryan Seacrest:  "We love each other so much, but vote for me, man!"

Constantine:  (Laughs)
