Scott Savol (Birth Year Song - American Idol 4, Final 8)

Scott Savol
Song: She's Gone  Check out 'She's Gone' at Amazon.com (Hall and Oates  Check out 'Hall and Oates' at Amazon.com) 1976

Scott Savol pumps some passion into his rendition of Hall and Oates' 'She's Gone', during the 'Final 8' night. (Birth Year Songs)
Scott has some highly qualified critics watching his performance tonight. No, not Randy, Paula and Simon! I'm talking 'Hall and Oates' who originally had a hit with 'She's Gone'.
It's a really good overall performance, although unfortunately there's a noticable wobble right at the very start of the number, when Scott doesn't quite hit the right key.
What's great about Scott's voice is his warm, rich vocal tone, and it really suits this song.

It's also good to see Scott loosening up and pumping a bit more passion into his performance. He sounded very believable tonight.

Amongst his believers are Paula Abdul, who dances her way through the number. Even Hall and Oates give the performance the thumbs up!

Scott Savol has lots of fans in the audience tonight, not least one 'Paula Abdul'!
Randy has reservations about pitchy low notes but he still rates the performance as "very good".
Simon seems to be the only non-believer. He tells Scott "there were more bum notes than there were good notes" ... unbelievable!

Panel-Bites:

Scott:  I chose 'She's Gone' by Hall and Oates from 1976, the year I was born. And everybody talks about the rockers in this competition. I'm the real rocker in this competition. When I was like 2 or 3 years old, I would rock out on anything! Toy guitars, pots, pans, anything I could find to make noise with that sounded like music to me. I grabbed it, and I rocked out! Yes!

Scott sings...

Randy Jackson:  Scotty. Scotty.

Paula Abdul:  Yayyyy!

Randy Jackson:  Scotty. Yo man! What's up baby? Scotty, one of the true dog pound members. What's up, man? So listen...

Scott:  (off camera) Yeah. Hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo!

Randy Jackson:  So listen, man, you know, you got it started, man. You know, you started off a little rough, man. Them low notes in the first and the second verse were a little... little pitchy. It was kind of rolling a little bit. But when you hit the chorus man!

Paula Abdul:  You try performing in front of Hall and Oates with their song.

Randy Jackson:  Hey, you know what, I wouldn't be doing it! But I would get my low notes in tune, though. So you know...

Scott:  It was so hard to hear the low notes, you know...

Randy Jackson:  ...yeah, the low notes are ... see he knows the low notes were a little rough. See, 'cause a true singer knows where they made mistakes.

Paula Abdul:  He...

Randy Jackson:  But...

Paula Abdul:  But...

Randy Jackson:  ...to say that, you brought it home though in the end though dawg. Good! Very good! Very good.

Paula Abdul:  I got to give it up to you. You know, that was like nerve wracking! I can't believe you took that on, but you did awesome Scott! You did awesome. (Applause - Paula looks at Simon and laughs!)

Simon Cowell:  Look, Scott. You know, you're a nice guy. However...

Paula Abdul:  (Laughs - Simon stares at her.)

Simon Cowell:  ...there were more bum notes than there were good notes.

Paula Abdul:  Baloney!

Simon Cowell:  No, no, no. I'm being serious. I'm being serious. So... (Audience boos)

Paula Abdul:  Why?

Simon Cowell:  I'm trying to keep this real...

Randy Jackson:  Oh.

Paula Abdul:  Oh.

Simon Cowell:  ...so therefore, on a whole, it wasn't very good.

Paula Abdul:  Yes, it was.

Scott:  What's real is that I'm up here, and there's like millions of people at home who didn't have the nerve to do this. So, I think I rocked. (Cheers)

Ryan Seacrest:  Scott Savol. Let's ask the ultimate critics here. Darryl, John, is he keeping it real?

Hall and Oates: (Give Scott the thumbs up!)

Ryan Seacrest:  Keeping it real... good! Stamp of approval right there. Hall, Oates and Savol?

Hall and Oates: (Both do a 'maybe' gesture.)

Ryan Seacrest:  Close enough... all right.
